Day 182- Richmond, Virginia: Godliness
When we serve God and pay attention to what we are being instructed we realize that we are far more than just regular people walking around on Planet Earth. We are a sophisticated species that was created in the image of God the Father, Maker of both Heaven and Earth. We have evolved as a civilization over the years and with every failure to “catch on”, provides us another opportunity to get it right in the eyes of God.
That is why being a person who is devout in their faith to Jesus Christ is not a bad thing. Likewise, being godly is not a bad thing either; because when we worship God and follow the directions that have been given to us, our lives are filled with an abundance of love. Love is at the nucleus of what we seek in life and is also the barometer of true happiness with both others and ourselves. If we simply love and refuse hate in our hearts, we are half way towards victory through Jesus Christ.
Life has many checks and balances, without measures between God and humans we would be lost. The truth is that we must be held accountable for our actions while also being given opportunities to grow in faith and love daily by God, which He does give us continuously, in order to prosper. Constant communication with God during our journey is necessary and expected in order for us to reap the benefits of a life after death, which is eternal in Heaven as we live life by the Spirit. In Galatians, we are taught what this means in laymen terms:
Life by the Spirit
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other”. Amen.
